2007 in Review
In 2007, the Chamber
continued to deliver programs and services to
meet the needs of our members and community in
an ever evolving business, economic, legal and
legislative environment.
Networking and Recognition
Events
• Recognized long standing members and outgoing
and incoming board members at annual Membership
Luncheon for nearly 200 members and guests.
• An elegant 99th Annual Dinner for 381 guests
honored Dan Albert as Citizen of the Year, Clyde
Roberson as Public Official of the Year, Pam
Dozier as Robert Littlefield recipient, Pacific
Tweed as Business of the Year and Vicki Lynch of
Eclectic Embroidery as Volunteer of the Year.
• At a stunning dinner for 446 guests, presented
prestigious MPCC Business Excellence Awards to
14 fine businesses who exemplify excellence in
our community: Carmel Academy of Performing
Arts, Brickman Marketing, The Mucky Duck, All
Saints Episcopal Day School, Monterey County
Fair Grounds, Monterey County Bank, SCRAMP Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca, Energia, Glastonbury Audio
Visual Event Specialists, Del Monte Shopping Center, Sultry One Studios,
Byte Technology, Monterey Peninsula Dental
Group, and the Monterey County Chapter of the
American Red Cross.
• Highlighted 16 non-profit members and donated
funds to 3 non-profit winners (Big Brothers Big
Sisters, SPCA of Monterey County and Rising
International) of an enjoyable “Peninsula’s Got
Talent” show with an audience of 150.
• Introduced Bayonet’s new course to over 100
enthusiastic golfers at annual Golf Classic.
• 140 travelers enjoyed MPCC’s first trade
mission to China.
• 11 Mixers showcased members and provided
valuable networking opportunities.
• Held 37 ribbon cutting celebrations.
• Launched the new “Chamber Paws” program to
provide casual networking with members and their
four legged companions.
Community Promotion and
Support
• Provided 5 day AT&T Pro-Am shuttle, serving
over 1,600 riders, bringing visitor business
into downtown Monterey
• To direct visitors to member businesses during
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s MotoGP, MPCC staff
and volunteers hosted and staffed a “Welcome
Center” booth at the 3 day event, where we
distributed the Chamber’s MotoGP promotional
map.
• Offered a dozen informative “Brown Bag”
sessions.
• A new Technology Action Group was formed to
help make MPCC a leader in the use of
technology, showcase technology members, provide
technology education, and serve as a community
for local technology leaders.
• Over 50 community organizations presented
their services to hundreds of families at MPCC’s
annual Back to School Festival, hosted at the
Del Monte Shopping Center.
• Over 900 classrooms received health supplies
from the Education Committee’s Health Supplies
Drive effort.
• 20 Monterey Peninsula schools received cash
donations from Chamber member businesses who
participated in the First Day of School program.
• MPCC introduced new green initiative at the
annual Fall Showcase tradeshow, featuring over
90 local exhibitors to over 600 attendees.
• Produced 2007-2008 MPCC Guide and Business
Directory focused on providing economic and
business information to relocators, residents,
and the business community.
The Voice of Business to
Government
• Reviewed legislation and recommended positions
on policies and legislation that affected our
business community.
• Submitted 10 letters to County leaders,
legislators and the Governor on issues including
Monterey Peninsula Airport operations, City of
Monterey land use, Monterey County signage, and
Monterey County transportation funding for top
projects including the 101 trade corridor,
Highway 156 widening, and a new Salinas
Road/Highway 1 interchange.
• Enhanced MPCC’s extensive public policy
statements by updating Environment public policy
statement to include green building policies.
• Actively supported the 2006 General Plan
Update (GPU4) and opposed the referendum process
and Measure A. Spearheaded a campaign to support
GPU 4, which included signing the ballot
argument, 2 educational articles and 7 weekly
key messages in ChamberLink, and a first ever
press conference including 5 Monterey County
Chambers.
• Annual Leadership Luncheon for nearly 200
interested members featured a full panel of
regional government officials including Senator
Abel Moldanado, Supervisor Dave Potter, City of
Carmel-By-The-Sea Mayor Sue McCloud, City of Del
Rey Oaks Mayor Joseph Russell, City of Marina
Mayor Ila Mettee-McCutchon City of Monterey
Council Member Libby Downey, City of Sand City
Mayor David Pendergrass, City of Seaside Mayor
Ralph Rubio, City of Pacific Grove Mayor Dan
Cort, Garrison Command Colonel Pamela Martis,
NPS President Daniel Oliver, Sheriff Mike
Kanalakis and representatives from both
Assemblyman John Laird and Congressman Sam
Farr’s offices.
• MPCC leaders proactively met with our State
representatives in Sacramento, joined Governor
Schwarzenegger and his cabinet members at an
inspiring Monterey Town Hall gathering, and
forged a new working relationship with key
Monterey County officials.
• Strengthened GAC with additional
representatives from education, construction and
hospitality.
Member Referrals
• Advocated and referred member businesses to
potential customers 5 days a week for 52 weeks.
• Referred member businesses over 12,000 times
personally by staff
• Responded to over 46,000 telephone inquiries –
40,000 by automated “InfoCenter” service and
over 6,000 personally by staff
• Greeted and assisted 6,000 “walk-in” guests
• Gained over 441,000 website visitors
Communications and
Infrastructure
• Produced 52 weekly ChamberLink pages and
gained an expanded presence of two pages each
week in 2008 to showcase members as well as
share stories and important dates to remember.
• Launched new MemberLink electronic newsletter
to quickly and cost effectively communicate
tips, ideas, announcements and ads that benefit,
educate and help grow member businesses.
• “Right-sized” and restructured staff with 6
dedicated and experienced professionals, each
focused on a critical area of operations:
Georgette Cash on programs and events, Judy
Currier on membership development and service,
Jesse Ostrom on member advocacy and community
support, Brad Smith on member and community
communications, DeLynn Rummel on financial and
business operations and Astrid Coleman as CEO.
• Invested in staff productivity with new office
computers and up to date software.
